Occupational Hazards: 2 die while evacuating soak-away pit in Ibadan

Two labourers died while evacuating a soak-way pit in Oremeji, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Wasiu, a bricklayer and Solomon, a vulcaniser had been hired by residents of a compound  at No 12, Sobande Avenue, Oremeji, to evacuate a soak-away pit at the back of a two-storey building.
According to Daily Sun, the Solomon and Wasiu had resumed duty early in the morning when the unfortunate incident occurred.
It was gathered that the two had used a pumping machine to suck out the first set of waste from the pit. Continue...

They had applied chemical to the remains of the waste when Solomon entered to continue evacuation, but got weak due to heat and the strong smell of the chemical. Wasiu in the process of rescuing his colleague entered the pit and died also.
It was around 10am that the third person working with them came with pipes and found out that they had died in the pit.
The compound has been deserted since the incident happened.
The Spokesperson of the Oyo State PoliceMr. Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed the report and said detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene on getting the report.
“Efforts are already in place to get relatives of the deceased as preliminary investigation goes on,” Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu said.
Last week, a similar incident happened in Lagos, when a married man fell inside a soak-away pit while trying to turn on his generator and drowned to death.
