Speaker House Of Reps, Aminu Tambuwal
Speaker Aminu Tambuwal of the House of Representatives says the Federal High Court ruling which restrained the house from reconvening over his defection to APC is to strengthen the institution of the National Assembly. Continue...
The court had on Monday ordered the house to maintain status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit filed by the speaker and APC members to stop an alleged plan by PDP members to reconvene the parliament before its December resumption date.
Tambuwal made the statement after rising from a consultative meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) executives alongside some other lawmakers in Abuja.
According to him, the judgement is not about himself but the institution of the national assembly and the nation’s democracy.
”Well, I expected nothing less from the Nigerian judiciary that has over time proven to be judicious.
“But I have this to say that this is not about me. It is about the institution of the National Assembly.
“It is about our hard earned democracy and I commend lovers of democracy of this country and beyond for their support for the sustenance of our democracy.”
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also told newsmen that the judgement was in a way, victory for the APC.
”The decision of the court to maintain status quo is welcome and it actually follows the rule of law.
He said the meeting deliberated on the issue of the speaker and took briefings from all the members and the party in respect of the upcoming convention and primaries.
Also addressing newsmen, Rep. Ali Ahmad, Chairman, House Committee on Justice, said that in all the strategies and planning, nothing could be achieved without God’s will.
”They are planning, we are planning but God is the best planner. We have a speaker that has never soiled his hands.
”The EFCC cannot arrest him; he is a lawyer who knows and abides by the law and so we will still wait on the courts.
“The court is the poor man’s hope and so we will wait,” Ahmad said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that over 80 APC lawmakers attended the meeting. (NAN)
