The sentencing of Oscar Pistorius has begun after the athlete was found guilty of the culpable homicide of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius shot Ms Steenkamp in their Pretoria home on February 14 last year but was cleared of murder, having strenously denied the charge, claiming he mistook her for an intruder in the bathroom.
Following lengthy legal proceedings, Judge Thokozile Masipa delivered her verdict at North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria last month, with culpable homicide carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years.
Pistorius was also charged with one count of discharging a firearm in public, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail, after being found guilty of firing a pistol in a Johannesburg restaurant.
However, the South African was acquitted of a second charge - relating to him allegedly shooting out of a car sunroof after an argument with police - with a further charge of illegal possession of ammunition also rejected.
Sentencing is expected to last for several days as Judge Masipa hears legal arguments and testimony.
